Continuous Provision Communication Books Bundle | Colourful Semantics
The Continuous Provision Communication Books Bundle is a collection of visual communication resources designed to support autistic and neurodivergent learners across everyday classroom play and learning experiences.
Organised using Colourful Semantics, each communication book provides carefully selected vocabulary for Core Words, WHO, WHAT DOING, WHAT, WHERE and WHAT LIKE?, helping adults model meaningful communication within the activity or provision area where it naturally happens.
Rather than providing generic vocabulary that sits separately from children’s experiences, these books are designed to bring communication support into continuous provision.

This bundle includes 7 Shared Communication Books covering a range of everyday continuous provision areas:
Construction Play supports communication around building, carrying, stacking, connecting, balancing and designing.
Water Play supports communication around pouring, filling, splashing, floating, sinking and exploring water.
Mud Kitchen supports communication around digging, scooping, squishing, patting, mixing, pouring and creating.
Sand Tray supports communication around digging, scooping, filling, emptying, burying, finding and building.
Playdough supports communication around rolling, squeezing, squishing, pressing, cutting, stretching, shaping and creating.
Home Corner supports communication around cooking, washing, cleaning, eating, drinking, serving, caring and everyday pretend play.
Mark Making supports communication around drawing, scribbling, writing, colouring, painting, stamping and making marks.
Designed for continuous provision
Each book is designed to be used within the provision area, alongside the real objects, resources and experiences children are already exploring.
The consistent visual structure means adults and learners become familiar with the same communication system across different areas of the classroom.
A child can use the same familiar Core Words, WHO, WHAT DOING, WHAT, WHERE and WHAT LIKE? structure whether they are building a tower, making a mud pie, rolling playdough, exploring water or creating marks on paper.
This consistency makes it easier for adults to model, respond and expand communication throughout the day, rather than limiting communication support to specific intervention sessions.
Support communication through real experiences
The Shared Communication Books are designed around the idea that communication happens throughout the day.
Adults can use the visuals to notice what a child is doing, join their play, model relevant vocabulary, respond to their communication and expand on what they are already communicating.
For example, during construction an adult might model “You’re building a tower.” During water play they might comment “You’re pouring the water.” During playdough they might say “You’re squeezing it.” During home corner they might model “You’re cooking.”
The aim is not to test vocabulary or require children to answer questions. Instead, the books provide adults with accessible vocabulary that can be used naturally within shared experiences.
Why use Colourful Semantics?
The vocabulary is organised using a consistent Colourful Semantics framework, helping adults support communication and language across different contexts.
The familiar colour-coded sections provide a predictable structure while allowing the vocabulary to change according to the activity.
This means the same visual system can be revisited across the classroom, helping adults model language consistently across continuous provision, play and learning experiences.

Use the books alongside your existing continuous provision rather than replacing it. Place the relevant communication book within the area where children are playing so that vocabulary is available at the point of need. The consistent design also makes it easy for adults to move between areas while maintaining familiar communication support.
