Description
The Home Corner Communication Book is a visual communication resource designed to support autistic and neurodivergent learners during meaningful home corner and pretend play. It is part of the Elevating Neurodiversity Shared Communication Book series.
Using the Colourful Semantics framework, the book brings together vocabulary for Core Words, WHO, WHAT DOING, WHAT, WHERE and WHAT LIKE?, giving adults a practical visual resource to support communication while children are cooking, eating, cleaning, caring for dolls and engaging in everyday role play.
Home corner play creates natural opportunities for communication because children can cook, wash, clean, eat, drink, help, tidy, serve, stir, set, pour and cut. The book helps adults use these real experiences as opportunities to model meaningful language without turning play into a formal language task.
What’s included
The book includes six Colourful Semantics communication sections alongside a Core Words section.
The WHAT DOING section focuses on everyday actions such as cook, wash, clean, eat, drink, help, tidy, serve, stir, set, pour and cut.
The WHAT section includes familiar home corner vocabulary such as food, cup, pot, plate, bowl, kettle, cutlery, pan, teapot, chair, table, doll, baby and bed.
The WHERE section focuses on meaningful locations including cupboard, house, oven, washing machine, sofa, bed, sink, hob, table, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living room.
The WHAT LIKE? section supports descriptive and commenting language with words such as hot, warm, cold, messy, clean, dirty, yucky, tasty, full, empty, soft, heavy, little, big and hard.
The WHO section supports people and pronouns commonly used during pretend play, while the Core Words section provides functional vocabulary for everyday interaction.
Model language during real play
The final page provides Ideas for Modelling Language, showing adults how to use the vocabulary naturally within shared play.
Examples include “You’re washing the dishes,” “I will set the table,” and “I’m making the bed.” The resource encourages adults to notice, join, model, respond and expand rather than simply asking questions or expecting children to label objects.
