Help learners understand and communicate what someone is doing with this practical Level 2 Colourful Semantics teaching pack.
The WHAT DOING layer helps learners connect a person or character with an action, building on their understanding of WHO and creating a stronger foundation for sentence building.
The pack has been designed for teachers, teaching assistants and Speech and Language Therapists supporting autistic and neurodiverse learners, with a focus on meaningful experiences, modelling and visual support.
What’s Included?
This printable resource includes teaching guidance, WHAT DOING visual supports, action resources and structured activities for practising the connection between WHO and WHAT DOING.
The resources can be used with familiar actions, photographs and everyday experiences before moving into more structured sentence-building activities.
How Can You Use It?
Introduce WHAT DOING through real actions wherever possible. You might model an action during play, movement, classroom routines or shared activities before using photographs, symbols and sentence-building resources.
The teaching guidance supports a gradual approach from adult modelling towards choices, sentence completion, open questions and more independent responses.
Learners can communicate the action through speech, AAC, signing, gesture, pointing or another communication method. The aim is to develop understanding and meaningful communication rather than simply asking learners to name verbs from pictures.

This resource is suitable for SEN and SEND teachers, teaching assistants, Speech and Language Therapists, Early Years practitioners, autism specialist settings and primary classrooms supporting autistic and neurodiverse learners.
It can be used for individual teaching, small-group intervention, classroom activities and everyday language opportunities.
